Living A More Sustainable Lifestyle

Monday, December 17, 2018
Living a more sustainable lifestyle is something that I've been passionate about for a while. We have free range chickens for eggs, grow our own spray free vegetables, use reusable shopping bags, and my three year old always has a zero waste lunch box for day care. I've also experimented with doTERRA essential oils and use natural cleaning products.
There's still so many changes that I'd like our little family to make. In 2019 I'm going to make it a real focus. My goal is to make ongoing small changes to live a more green lifestyle. Below is a smorgasbord of ideas I've come up with so far.

A Smorgasbord of Sustainable Living Ideas for 2019

  • One of my big goals is to double the number of fruit edibles we have in our backyard, and work towards creating a food forest. We currently have two apple trees (Royal Gala and Greenmeadow's Cox Orange), three blueberries bushes, Tropical Guava, Meyer Lemon, Satsuma Mandarin, passionfruit, Black Doris and Omega Plums (double grafted), Pixzee Dwarf Peach, and a mix of strawberry plants.
  • Further develop our large vegetable gardens and move towards organic gardening.
  • Make our own honey wraps.
  • Learn some new skills e.g. how to preserve, pickle, make chutney, jam, sour dough bread, cheese and kifir.
  • Plant some more native trees.
  • Finally get a recycling bin (we've never had one since moving in).
  • Reduce our single use of plastic.
  • Start a worm farm
  • Create 2-3 compost bins.
  • Have a go at making my own cleaning products.
  • Move towards having organic chicken eggs and more natural preventives for mites (we get hit every summer with these little guys).
  • Get back into essential oils.
  • I also have changes planned for at work (I'm a primary school teacher). There are plans to create a seed library and a community fruit/veggie stand.

I'll continue to blog the changes I make as I go along. Small changes can make a big difference.

Start where you are.
Use what you have.
Do what you can.
